James's interests center on modernism’s relationship to its economic, political, and material context. He is interested in how new modes of cultural production were conceived during this period of institutional change, both through new aesthetic forms and the material practices through which they were transmitted. Toward this end, he is interested in using Marxist, sociological, and book history approaches to explore literary production as an economic activity in its own right, one that encompasses intermediary actors, such as publishers or patrons, as well as the composition of audiences and their modes of consumption.
