Sanford Sternlicht
Born in New York City and educated at City College New York, State University of New York at Oswego (B.S.), Colgate (M.A. with distinction), and Syracuse University (Ph.D.). Sanford Sternlicht is a wide-ranging scholar-writer-theater director. In 1960 he received the New Poets Award from Writer Magazine. In 1963 he was awarded a writing fellowship from the Poetry Society of America. In 1974 he received the State University of New York Chancellor's Medal for Excellence in Teaching. SUNY Research Fellowships were granted in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1969, and 1970. The British Council awarded him a 1994 Research and Travel Grant to Northern Ireland. The English-Speaking Union awarded him Sir Evelyn Wrench Travel/Lecture Grants in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
Teaching at SUNY: Oswego from 1959-1986, Sternlicht was Professor of English, Director of Graduate Studies in English, and subsequently Chairperson of the Department of Theatre. Professor Sternlicht began teaching at Syracuse University in 1981 as Professor of English (half-time). He is now full-time Professor of English.
From 1965 to 1966 Professor Sternlicht was Leverhulme Fellow and Visiting Professor of English in the University of York, England. Professor Sternlicht was Fulbright Senior Specialist and Visiting Professor of English at the University of Pécs, Hungary, March, 2004. The New York Council for the Humanities has appointed Professor Sternlicht a Speaker in the Humanities 2009-2012.
