Ken Frieden

Ken Frieden is a Professor of English and the B.G. Rudolph Professor of Judaic Studies at Syracuse University .

Ken Frieden's research and teaching focus on nineteenth-century Yiddish and Hebrew narrative. He published a scholarly study called Classic Yiddish Fiction in 1995 and, more recently, he edited an anthology of Yiddish fiction. He is working on a book about Hebrew and Yiddish narratives of sea travel.

Emphasizing the interrelationships between modern German, Hebrew, and Yiddish fiction, he has shown that translation played a major role in Jewish literature of the nineteenth century. His work in progress may be called Innovation by Translation or Travels in Translation.

Areas of supervision: Religion and literature; Psychoanalytic approaches to fiction; Yiddish and Hebrew literature.
