Michael J. C. Echeruo
Prof. Echeruo read English at University College, Ibadan (BA [London]) and English and American Literature at Cornell University, Ithaca (MA; Ph D). He has a wide range of interests: Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, 20th Century English Novel, Colonial and Postcolonial African Culture and Thought, African Linguistics and Lexicography, Literary Theory, and African-American and Diaspora Studies. He has published books or major articles in these fields. He is currently at work on two projects: the Language of Religious Discourse in Igbo Culture and White Identity in South African Literature. A selection of his first book of poems won First Prize in the All-Africa poetry competition. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, and recipient of honorary Doctorate degrees from Nigerian and American Universities. He serves currently as the Chairman of the MLA Committee on the New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare.
His books include Joyce Cary and the Novel of Africa ; The Dimensions of Order ; The Conditioned Imagination: Studies in the Exo-Cultural Stereotype ; Victorian Lagos: Aspects of Nineteenth Century Lagos Life ; an edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest ; An Igbo-English Dictionary , and A Concordance to the Poetry of Christopher Okigbo .
